Google AI Mode is now the default way people search, and a local business that wants the call has to be the business the answer names. On May 19, 2026, at I/O, Google said AI Mode had passed one billion monthly users, made it the default experience worldwide on its Gemini 3.5 Flash model, and announced that for categories like home repair, beauty and pet care, Google will phone businesses on the searcher's behalf. Here is what that changes for a Michigan service business, and the six things to do about it this month.
In short
- AI Mode passed one billion monthly users and is now the default search experience, per Google at I/O on May 19, 2026. Queries in it more than doubled every quarter since launch.
- Google will call businesses for the searcher in select categories, and agentic booking is expanding to local services, rolling out across the US in summer 2026.
- A Google Business Profile name that adds a tagline, a city or a service word breaks Google's guidelines and, in Google's own words, could result in the suspension of the profile.
- The signals AI Mode reads are the ones you already control: the profile, the reviews, the website, and whether the phone gets answered.

What actually changed on May 19
Three things, from Google's own announcement post. AI Mode became the default search experience, so the written answer with follow-up box is what a searcher sees first, not what they opt into. The model behind it is Gemini 3.5 Flash. And the search box itself was rebuilt for the first time in over 25 years, so people type longer, fuller questions: not "plumber troy mi" but "who can fix a leaking water heater in Troy today and what will it cost."
The fourth change is the one that matters to a service business. Google said it is expanding agentic booking to local experiences and services, and that for select categories such as home repair, beauty and pet care, a searcher can ask Google to call businesses on their behalf. The rollout is US-wide this summer, some features first for paying subscribers. So the next customer may not be a person reading your listing. It may be Google's agent ringing your line at 7:40 in the evening to ask whether you have a slot Thursday.
Why the old approach stops working
Under the ten-link page, a business could be fourth in the map pack and still get chosen because the searcher scanned, compared and clicked. AI Mode writes a paragraph and names the businesses it thinks fit. Google's Press Gazette statement in January 2026 put it plainly: a searcher can ask a follow-up straight from an AI Overview and drop into a conversation with AI Mode. Every follow-up narrows the answer. Fewer businesses get mentioned each time, and the ones that do are the ones whose data Google trusts.
That trust comes from the profile. Google's guidelines say the business name on the profile must reflect the real-world name as used on the storefront, website and stationery, with no taglines, no service or product words, no location details and no phone numbers or URLs. Adding "Troy" or "Emergency Plumbing" to the name to rank better was always against the rules; Google says it "could result in the suspension of your Business Profile," and a suspended profile is invisible to AI Mode entirely. The shortcut that used to cost nothing now costs the listing.
Six things a local business does this month

- Make the profile name the real name. Open Google Business Profile and read the name field against the sign on the door. If they differ, fix the field, not the sign. Then check the primary category is the one a customer would say, and that the hours are the hours you keep, including holidays.
- Write one page per service that answers the question in the first paragraph. AI Mode quotes sentences. A page that opens with "We repair and replace gas and electric water heaters across Oakland County, usually same day" gets quoted. A page that opens with a slogan does not. How AI search reads a website is a longer treatment of this.
- Answer the phone, every time, at any hour. Google's agent calls to ask about availability. A voicemail is a no. If the desk cannot answer after 6 pm, something else has to.
- Put a booking link on the profile. Google's agentic booking works with the booking systems the profile already exposes. A profile without one gets skipped for one with.
- Ask for the review inside a day of the job, and reply to every one. Reviews are the sentences AI Mode borrows when it describes you. Replies show the profile is alive.
- Ask AI Mode the customer's question once a month. "Who is the best furnace repair company near Farmington Hills?" Read what it says. If it names a competitor and not you, the answer tells you which of the five steps above is undone.
The mistake most businesses make at step 3
They treat the phone as a human problem and the search as a marketing problem, and fix only the second one. The profile is perfect, the pages are rewritten, and the call from Google's agent at 7:40 pm rings out to voicemail because the desk went home at five. Under the ten-link page the customer might have called back tomorrow. An agent asking three businesses for Thursday takes the first yes.
The second mistake is measuring the wrong thing. Ranking position in the map pack still matters, but AI Mode does not have positions. It has mentions. The monthly question in step 6 is the measurement; a rank tracker is not.
What we build for this

Two of the six steps are systems rather than tasks, and they are the two we build. Google Business Profile management keeps the name, categories, hours, posts and reviews correct and answered, so the profile is the one Google trusts. And an AI front desk answers every call inside a few seconds at any hour, gives the hours and the next open slot, and books it, which is what Google's agent is going to ask for. Missed calls were already the most expensive leak in a service business when a person was on the other end. From this summer, the caller may be a machine that does not leave a message.
Start with step 1 this week. It takes ten minutes, it is free, and a profile that breaks the naming guideline is the only one of the six that can take the whole listing down with it.
